Smart Financing and Empowerment: Crowdfunding in Energy

Crowdfunding in energy is a brand new sector, serving the transition to de-carbonized energy systems, providing access to capital and facilitating the spread of innovative business models and approaches conductive of greater participation of citizens and communities in distributed renewable energy projects. Crowdfunding in the energy sector has been declined in most of its forms, ranging from peer-to-business lending to pure donation, with strong environmental and social mission and the explicit aim of increasing participation of citizens in sustainable energy investment. Results from one of the few comprehensive review of this emerging sector will be presented. Is crowdfunding in energy a people empowering tool? Are energy crowdfunding platforms moving from niche, grass root initiatives into larger projects? What is the role and collaboration with energy private sector and institutional finance?
