Gamification, Crowdsourcing & Big Data: The Convergence Point – Are We Here?

Rajiv Vaid Basaiawmoit

The last few years have seen an exponential rise in two phenomenon – powered by rapid developments in the ICT sphere – Gamification and Crowdsourcing – so much so that we are today at a convergence point. A critical point, as how these two developments will interact will define the progression curves of the future – will they go hand-in-hand or will they diverge again? Can these be split from each other? Initial trends suggest the latter – as crowdsourcing is increasingly using gamification to engage crowds beyond monetary incentives alone. However, these are mostly passive implementations and mostly non-interactive, in the sense that the crowds get their tasks done – while people probably have fun or get their egos massaged. Effective crowdsourcing of tomorrow will require more than cursory gamification. It will require high-level gamification design that will be coupled to yet another emerging trend – that of Big data. Science advancement from the search for the cure for cancer to that of diabetes or to counter global warming are all today “big data” sciences… and they are learning to use the crowd increasingly to solve the world’s toughest challenges. The next cure for cancer probably will come not from science but from the crowd. The question is are we well prepared to reap this hive intelligence or will we drown in a data deluge? That is why Good gamification design for effective crowdsourcing is important more than ever before!

Attendees will see examples of good gamification design and how the crowd is changing the world around them and where their participation is not just one-way but two-way. They will also learn some basic gamification design elements that they should consider when they plan for effective crowdsourcing of their own tasks in the future.
